In this 20-30 minute session, Patrick Quinn previews his one-hour class on Application Server Analytics (ASA), an evolving niche in Web-based software development. It consists of a combination of tools and methodologies for real-time monitoring and troubleshooting of Web sites and applications. The goal of ASA is to improve performance and stability (and thus uptime) for Web applications by helping developers and systems administrators "see" application server internals much more clearly, and also by allowing for much easier use of ASA metrics to fix and even prevent problems.

Come see a preview (about 20-30 minutes) of one of my CFUnited sessions, this one on Apache Derby. No, it's not "new in CF9", but many have missed or dismissed it. In this session, you will learn about the Apache Derby database included in ColdFusion 8. A full-featured database with a ten-year heritage, Apache Derby is fully transactional, easy to use, and standards based and has the advanced features you'd expect in any quality DBMS. Yet it's small, at only 2MB. You'll find out how to use Apache Derby within ColdFusion, as well as about tools that work with it and where to learn more. Again, this is just a preview, but for many it will be more than they've ever heard about the Derby DBMS embedded in CF8. I'm sure some will have preconceived notions about the tool. Come share your thoughts. I hope to dispel a few myths along the way.

Git is awesome, this is known. Git doesn't restrict how you do things and that can be a two edged sword. If you are working by yourself you can get away with working however you wish. If you are collaborating with others there needs to be some sort of method to the madness, this is where workflows come in. Work flows a common template of branching and merging code. It is not something you install, rather it is a way of working. In our discussion we will discuss two of the most common workflows: Gitflow Github flow After discussing these you will be better able to decide for yourself which would work better in your organization or adapt the model to fit your needs better.

We will introduce CI (continuous integration) concepts and benefits. Hopefully you have seen presentations over ant, setting up Jenkins, unit testing and refactoring your code. I always walk away thinking this is awesome but it can be a daunting process to get everything working in one step. This presentation will walk you through a bridge, an intermediate step, you can use immediately in your projects to get usable feedback from Jenkins on your cfml code.

Let's automate the boring stuff with ColdFusion! Let's build our own tools to supercharge ColdFusion servers, leverage existing ColdFusion libraries, and streamline daily development. All you need is your current knowledge of ColdFusion to leverage CommandBox's extensible framework for crafting new tools and automations. If you've used CommandBox to spin up ColdFusion servers on your local machine, you already know it's a very powerful tool - but did you know it's capable of far more? In this session we'll explore a completely different use for CommandBox - building custom tooling. That is, we'll use your existing knowledge of ColdFusion, along with CommandBox, to automate, extend, and enhance your development workflows, servers, and environment. We'll begin by examining the code, structure, and functionality of some existing CommandBox custom commands. These are powerful tools that you can begin using right away! You'll see how helper components, convenience methods, and built-in utilities all come together to make CommandBox custom commands and task runners possible. CommandBox makes it trivial to harness all the functionality of ColdFusion (think PDF generation, emails, and more), as well as provide command-line interactivity. This is all put together with an intuitive DSL and conventions that make creating your own shareable, reusable command modules straightforward and accessible. So, we'll build on what we've learned from existing CommandBox modules, and I'll walk you through the process of crafting your own commands and task runners. By the end, you'll be ready to take full advantage of the power of ColdFusion and CommandBox to automate all-the-things, from small day-to-day programming tasks, to larger projects and applications.
