MultiServer

ColdFusion supports different forms of deployment, at least in the Enterprise, Developer, or Trial editions. (In the Standard edition, it comes only in the base Server form of deployment).

The MultiServer form of deployment is often referred to as "multiple instances".

When the Multiserver form of deployment is chosen (during installation of ColdFusion), by default 2 instances are created: cfusion and admin. The cfusion instance is the primary instance, which can be used to create still other instances (by way of an available "Enterprise Manager" option in its ColdFusion Administrator.

The Admin instance is NOT related to the ColdFusion Administrator. Instead, it's the instance that runs the JRun Admin console. Most will not need this, and as such the instance can safely be stopped, so that memory and resources are not used by it. (If running it as a Windows Service, it can be set--in the properties for the Windows service--to start "manually", so as to be started only if ever needed). The Admin instance is a vestigial remnant from before ColdFusion 6.1, when the Enterprise Manager was added (in the cfusion instance).

Note that if you have already installed the Server form of deployment, you can also install the Multiserver form of deployment on the same machine (and vice-versa).
